Neurology
In neurology, we provide a medical examination and treatment of diseases caused by abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles.
Among the symptoms that we treat in neurology are headaches, dizziness, disorders in movement (e.g. loss of muscle strength, paralysis, ataxic movements), disorder in sensation (e.g. like numbness of the limbs), intellectual impairment (e.g. memory loss) and higher brain dysfunction like aphasia.
To name some of the neurological diseases, there are several categories such as: functional diseases (e.g. headaches, dizziness and epilepsy), cerebral stroke (e.g. brain infarction and brain hemorrhage), neuro-degenerating diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s disease), dementia (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease), immune neurological disorder (e.g. disseminated sclerosis), peripheral nerve disorders of the facial nerves and limbs and muscular disorders (e.g. muscular dystrophy).
In addition, many people who visit us are concerned about symptoms of Minamata disease such as disorders of the senses (e.g. numbness of the limbs) and ataxia (e.g. staggering). Some typical symptoms in the severe cases are the narrowing of the visual field, auditory disorders and difficulty in speaking comprehensibly.
Rehabilitation medicine
At our rehabilitation clinic we provide treatment for medical diseases such as cerebral stroke and cerebrovascular problems like lumbar spinal disease. Our therapists provide physiotherapy, kinesitherapy, and rehabilitation at home, from the initial chronic phase of the disease to the subsequent maintenance phase.
In cases of Minamata disease, rehabilitation is very important. It is difficult to eliminate symptoms completely because methylmercury harms central nerve cells. However, through the rehabilitation the central nerves can regenerate the network to some extent and symptoms can be alleviated.
In our clinic, we draw up rehabilitation plans for the improvement of function, ability, and social handicap.
Psychiatry ･ Psychosomatic medicine
Through psychiatry we deal with diseases such as integration dysfunction syndrome, mental ailments like depression, neurosis and personality disorders resulting from stress or trauma.
Psychosomatic medicine provides medical examination and treatment for the physical symptoms involving the mind.
In today’s “stress society” mental ailments resulting from various forms of stress in the workplace and from abuse and domestic violence are on the increase.
In cases of Minamata disease, we give extra consideration to the fact that there are quite a lot of patients who have emotional scars from the discrimination they may have suffered from.

Internal medicine
In recent years, the different fields of medicine, including internal medicine, have tended to become more specialized. Our clinic deals with the more common and general internal medical diseases. When a more technical medical examination and treatment are required, we cooperate with the Minamata Kyoritsu Hospital and we can also introduce the patient to the internal medicine or surgical departments of other medical institutions.
The majority of the patients with neurological disorders or mental ailments also have medical diseases or physical symptoms. Wherever possible we make a diagnosis and provide medical treatment at our clinic.
At our clinic, we provide a medical examination and treatment using Chinese herbal medicine and/or acupuncture. When using Chinese medicine, we often try to deal with both the physical and mental symptoms, and use it in conjunction with Western medical techniques.
